Exploring the Intersections of Movement, Ecology, and Visual Imagery

A Unique Practice

Adam is a photographer, trail runner, and naturalist. His practice and work explore the boundaries and intersections of mindful movement, ecology and naturalism, and the power of images to motivate personal change. This practice is a form of “concursive naturalism” or running with nature. By moving mindfully through wild and cultivated landscapes and attending closely to the plants, animals, and fungi we encounter, we engage in a mutually restorative practice that promotes wellbeing in ourselves and in the living world around us. Whether running, hiking, or walking, movement fosters an embodied and personal connection to the natural world and an appreciation for your role within it.

Photography

As a photographer, Adam focuses on dramatic landscapes and detailed images of flora and fauna, covering a wide range of ecosystem types across the United States, all of which are accessible through everyday hiking and trail running.

Running

As a runner, Adam has completed twelve ultramarathons. Over the last ten years he has run over 15,000 miles and dedicated over 2,800 hours to running. During this time, he has run throughout the United States with the Pacific Northwest, New England, and the San Francisco Bay Area serving as geographic anchors.

Naturalism

As a naturalist, Adam brings mindful attention to the land and close study of ecology to his running and photography. His extensive contributions to iNaturalist reflect the breadth of biological diversity present in nature and in communities where he has lived and traveled.

Professional Life

Adam is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Stanford University’s School of Medicine.
